The tragic death of Patty Duke

Anna Marie "PattyDuke was born on December 14, 1946, in Queens, New York. She was a theatre actress, a television actress, a television producer, as well as an activist.

She shot to fame at the age of sixteen with her first starring role as Helen Keller in the Broadway play 'The Miracle Worker' and won an academy award for her brilliant performance. This was just the beginning for Duke in the world of theatre. That same year she was also given her own show titled The Patty Duke Show, in which she played "identical cousins". She embraced more mature roles later on. She was the recipient of a number of accolades over the span of her film career. She was nominated a grand total of ten times for the prestigious Emmy award and won three Emmy Awards, as well as two Golden Globes awards. Duke was also the President of the Screen Actor Guild from 1985 to 1988.

On March 29, 2016, Patty Duke passed away from sepsis caused by her ruptured intestine at 1:20 a.m. in a hospital near her home in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho. Sepsis is basically the response to an infection in the body which can lead to organ failure and, in worst cases, death. It was believed that there was a rupture or a hole in her intestine that caused sepsis in her body. According to her son Sean Astin, she was also suffering from emphysema due to heavy smoking.

Duke was a sickly woman. She was diagnosed with bipolar syndrome in 1982 and championed mental health awareness from then on. Sean Astin advocated his mother’s fight for mental health awareness after her death on Tuesday, requesting for donations to raise awareness for mental health and all the problems associated with it.
